John H. Shean

John Shean was born and raised in Los Angeles.  He was one of six children and decided to become an attorney at an early age.  He received his bachelor's degree as a double major in History and Political Science from Claremont McKenna College in 1978.  His alma mater is currently ranked 12th in the nation among liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report.  John graduated in the top 1/3 of his class from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 1981.  He worked as a law clerk during law school at the Los Angeles law firm of Wise & Nelson and joined the firm as an associate in 1981.  He was groomed as an insurance defense attorney from 1981 to 1988.  During that time, he handled hundreds of cases for international insurance carriers and their policy holders including automobile accident claims, construction accidents, landslide cases, aviation accidents, maritime accidents, products liability actions, medical and legal malpractice, wrongful death claims, insurance coverage and bad faith claims.

When he opened Shean Law Offices in 1990 in Bloomington, Indiana, John Shean put this vast array of experience to work for injured clients throughout the state of Indiana.  John has represented thousands of clients in diverse matters:  worker's compensation claims, auto accidents, construction accidents, products liability claims, food poisoning, wrongful death, commercial litigation, federal civil rights claims, consumer litigation, automobile lemon law claims, slip and fall accidents, insurance agent malpractice, insurance coverage, fire loss, insurance bad faith, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, boating accidents, and defective toy cases.

The commitment of John and his wife, Cheryl, to serving those in need is best exemplified by their move to Indiana in 1988.   After losing their 11 month-old son, Patrick, to liver disease in 1985, John resigned from his legal partnership in Los Angeles to take the position of executive director of COTA - the Children's Organ Transplant Association.  He served in this position until early 1990.  Under John's leadership, COTA developed the successful fundraising model that it uses to this day to help transplant-needy children and their families.  He led the transformation of the organization from a local charity into a national network of volunteers supported by a firm base of corporate and foundational donations.

John has also served for years as pro bono counsel for several non-profit corporations including the:  Crisis Pregnancy Center and Hannah House Maternity Home of Bloomington , Heart Of Sailing, and Realife Media.  He actively serves at Ellettsville Christian Church as a member of the drama team.   Dressed something like an Australian scout master, John becomes "Crocodile John Dee" every year during ECC's Vacation Bible School, where he acts out a lesson each day for over 500 children.  On occasion you can even see John at the pulpit as he fills in for his pastor.  Once a month, John visits sick and elderly members of the congregation to serve communion.
